Business Meeting - Part 1
Thursday, June 21st, 2007 | church, teaching
I have been given the “heads up” that at this Sunday’s business meeting we will be voting on whether or not to continue the practice of allowing women to be deacons.
We currently have two or three woman deacons and some people believe this is wrong. I am going to try my best to not over sleep during my Sunday afternoon nap and go to this meeting. I really hate business meetings - I think they are a waste of time, but I think I might even speak up at this one. Why? Well because it is very rare that you talk about the bible in a Church business meeting. But this topic is filled with opportunity!
When it comes to women deacon, this is my position, without giving away my position.
1) According to the New Testament, what is a “deacon”?
2) According to the New Testament GREEK, what does the made up English word “deacon” mean?
3) According to the New Testament, what are the responsibilities of a “deacon”?
4) Do we see any examples of deacons in the New Testament? If so, what do can we learn from these examples?
I have a feeling that the majority of the people there have never asked these questions, nor have they heard them answered. Of course, if this is true, should we really be voting to decide who can and who cannot be a “deacon”?
If I do get to go, then I will try to give you all an update with what happened.
In the meantime, what are you thoughts on women deacons?
